Kirk Lyles Roberts, 95, died on Friday, April 5, 2024, at his home surrounded by family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, April 8, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Chester with the Reverend Clay Waldrip officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00pm on Sunday, April 7, 2024, at the home, 2891 JE Roberts Road.
Born in Chester on August 3, 1928, Mr. Roberts was the sixth of nine children of the late Jessie Marie Wagers Roberts and John Elbert Roberts, Sr. A 1948 graduate of Blackstock High School, he was drafted into the 24th division, 19th Regiment, of the US Army in 1951, and served honorably in the Korean War seeing conflict in three major campaigns. For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, three campaign medals, the combat leader medal, and the combat infantry medal. He returned back home to the family farm on October 10, 1952 and worked with his brothers in the Roberts Service Station until 1960.
Mr. Roberts then joined South State Chevrolet, and worked with Gene Rachels’ and Kirby until his retirement in 1993. After retirement, Mr. Roberts continued to farm and enjoy hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family on the same land where he was raised. He loved his family; western movies; old time gospel, country, and bluegrass music; and his Lord.
In 1954, Mr. Roberts married the late Ann Wages and they had two daughters, the late Teresa Ann “Terry” Roberts and Marie “Rie” Roberts Nunnery. In 1984, he married Marie Carter Connor, the love of his life and the center of his world. Mr. Roberts was a member of First Baptist Church and was a Mason and a Shriner.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter, Rie (Eddie); stepchildren, Ann C. Shirley (Lewis) and Brian C. Connor (Della); three grandchildren, Ben J. Nunnery (Hanna), Rebecca N. Partain (Eric), and K. Maverick Farley (Denae); seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Terry; stepdaughter, Jeannie C. Holt; great-granddaughter Forest Mae Farley; his parents; his brothers, J. Wade Roberts, John E. Roberts Jr., Gary Preston ‘Press’ Roberts Sr., Edward Halsell Roberts, and Troy Wagers Roberts; and his sisters, Agnes R. Banks, Katherine “Kitty” R. Wright, Dorothy “Cissie” R. Stevenson.
