Ret. Col. John "Johnny" Elbert Roberts, III of Halsellville went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 1st. Johnny was predeceased by his parents, John E. Roberts, Jr. and Tillie McClintock Roberts. Johnny was a revered country gentleman and was known for his witty personality. Johnny lived life fully as farmer, educator and Roberts family historian. He loved and served his country honorably for 30 years (including Vietnam and Desert Storm) in the United States Armed Service retiring as a Colonel, Armor. Johnny owned and operated Halsellville Farms for 30 years.
Johnny was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved the outdoors and our natural resources. Johnny served for 13 years on the Fairfield Electric Cooperative Board of Directors and as an administrator and teacher at Chester County Public Schools. A product of Chester County High School, Johnny was always proud to have earned college degrees from three different SC universities. Johnny received his B.S. from Clemson University, his M.A. from The Citadel and his Eds. PhD. from the University of South Carolina. Johnny is survived by his sister, Jan Roberts Hammond (Edward), of Columbia; his nephews Clint Hammond (Rachel) and John Hammond of Columbia, and his niece Jenny Hammond Gantt (Michael); his four great nephews, Gibbs Hammond, Jake Hammond, Palmer Gantt and Will Gantt; and two great nieces, Bess Hammond and Lucy Hammond. Mr. Charles "Maxie" Banks will conduct the graveside service 4:00 p.m., Sunday, July 7th 2024 at Beaver Creek Baptist Church, 1213 Halsellville Rd, Chester, SC 29706.
