Obituary

The service for Jim will be Saturday, July 27th at noon in the chapel of Pollard Funeral Home.

Robert James "Jim" Smith, Jr., 79, of Chester passed away Monday. He was the widow of Satira Rose Smith and the son of the late Robert J. & Annette Waldrop Smith, Sr. He is survived by his best and faithful furry companion, Houdini; two sons, Mitchell L. Patterson (Rita) of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida and Michael B. Patterson of Socastee, SC. Also surviving are three sisters, Dianne Sayre (Lew) of Grand Junction, Colorado, Candice "Candy" Parker (Dan) of Annandale, Virginia, Janice "Jan" Annette McDonald (Doug) of Simpsonville, SC.

Jim was born in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Northside High School, received his BSIM from Georgia Institute of Technology and his MS from American Technological University in Copperas Cove, Texas (Ft. Hood) now Texas A&M-Central. Jim was ten year veteran of the U.S. Army (Americal Division, 11th Light Infantry, 1969-1970, Vietnam). After his military days Jim worked for SC Dept. of Mental Health, Charter Medical Corp. and SC Dept. of Social Services. Upon retirement Jim worked for Pollard Funeral Home as a funeral assistant and also as the director of the pet cremations. He was a member of the American Legion Post 34 in Rock Hill, SC where he proudly served in the Honors Guard. Jim was a member of Richburg Masonic Lodge 89 and Past Master of Chester Masonic Lodge 18, a member of the York Rite and Scottish Rite; and a member of Purity Presbyterian Church in Chester.
