James Gary Lingerfelt, age 78, of High Point North Carolina, died Tuesday, April 21, 2020. Gary was born in Chester, South Carolina on June 18, 1941, to James H. and Hattie Crosby Lingerfelt. Gary grew up in Tampa, Florida where his Dad owned a barbershop and his Mom stayed at home with Gary and his siblings. Gary graduated from the University of Florida (Go Gators! he would say) with a degree in electrical engineering. During his engineering career he was a ‘rocket scientist’ at Cape Canaveral working for NASA, worked for years at Harris in Melbourne Florida (where he made several life-long friends), worked for NCR in Columbia, SC for many more years (where he made additional friends) and retired from Analog Devices in Greensboro. He will be truly missed by his family and friends. Gary is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara (née Logan) Lingerfelt, of High Point, North Carolina, a retired teacher, as well as his two daughters, Mary Anna Lingerfelt of Pleasant Garden, NC, also a scientist (following in Gary’s footsteps) with a PhD in Medicinal Biochemistry and Charlotte Shea (and her husband Steven Shea) of Tallahassee, Florida. He is also survived by his granddaughter and great granddaughter, Emily Gregg and Ryanne Gwaltney (Tallahassee), his two nieces and two nephews and their families, as well as three step-daughters and their families. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Earl Crosby Lingerfelt, and sister, Carol Jones Lingerfelt. Gary loved science fiction as well as all things related to science and would want all who knew and loved him to ‘live long and prosper’.
A private burial will be held in Evergreen Cemetery and a celebration of his life will be held at a future date.
